What is Tsuguko in Demon Slayer ?

In Demon Slayer Corps, Tsuguko or translated as successor in English is the talented apprentice of Hashira who is designated to be their successor after their predecessor's death or retirement.

A Demon Slayer can become a Tsuguko in one of two ways: either by applying for the position and being accepted or by being scouted by one of the existing Hashira.

The Tsuguko's function is to stand in for the Hashira they serve if and when that Hashira finds themselves in a situation that prevents them from performing their duties as one of the champions of the Demon Slayer Corps, such as when the Hashira retires or passes away.

An example of a tsuguko in the series is Kanao Tsuyuri who trained under the Insect Hashira, Shinobu Kocho. Some Tsuguko did not eventually grow as the respective Hashira's successor. For instance, Mitsuri the Love Hashira initially served as Rengoku the Flame Hashira's Tsuguko before becoming a Hashira herself.

I love how the Demon Slayer Series uses the tsuguko concept to add depth to both the series and the Demon Slayer Corps. Hopefully, as the anime continues, we'll get to see more of this.
